Issues that just keep coming up in our district . . .
Excessive "paperwork" (paper & electronic): This includes all record keeping - - attendance reports, lesson plans, team agendas, IEPs, discipline referrals, documentation for parent contacts, tracking sheets, progress reporting, grade reporting, and so on.
Loss of preparation & planning time: This includes having to use prep time for meetings, team planning, duty of all types, preparing lengthy required lesson plans, attending ARDs, and so on.
Over-large classes: Class sizes of 30 or more students for both core & elective classes is too large. This affects secondary campuses throughout the district.
Punitive or capricious administrators: Members from all levels report overzealous administrators who use counter- productive management techniques that bully rather than mentor staff.
Inconsistent discipline enforcement: Some campuses provide ineffective discipline & little consequence for misbehavior or even abusive behavior toward staff & fellow students.
Safety of staff & students: This comes from campuses at all levels & is a result of inconsistent or inadequate discipline procedures.
Rigid accountability for staff BUT little accountability for students: High standards for student achievement are expected of teachers - - but teachers are strongly discouraged from assigning failing grades even when little or no work has been turned in. "Failure is not an option" has come to mean "Teachers may not fail students." In addition, TAKS scores are used to reflect teacher performance.
